Screen engraving systems

Before a screen printing machine can print anything, somebody has to make the screen. These machines image it directly from the file — no film, no ink, no wax and no exposure frame. Built by DOSUN of Hangzhou, who wrote the Chinese national standard for computer-to-screen engraving.

Where engraving sits in the process

  • Coating — the screen is coated with photosensitive emulsion.
  • Low-temperature oven — the coating is dried.
  • Laser engraving — the machine images the pattern straight from the file.
  • Developing, then testing.
  • High-temperature oven, end ring fitted, screen finished.

Why it pays

Direct engraving removes film, ink and wax from the process along with the exposure step, so a design goes from the screen on the computer to a screen on the machine without a darkroom in between. For a mill running a rotary screen printing line, the engraver is what decides how quickly a new design reaches production — and how fine the detail can be.

Flat screens, rotary, or both?

It depends on what your printing machines take and how fine your designs are. Tell us the screen sizes and repeats you work to and we will say which of these suits, or whether one machine can cover both.
